- [01:31:45] <lemay>
I??e been trying to figure out what my development environment is going to be
- [01:32:24] <lemay>
Ive got to admit that getting a reasonable process in place is not straightforward
- [01:34:10] <lemay>
I hope to have something good in place by the time it arrives ... usps says friday!
- [01:36:08] <djlewis>
interesting, I have NEVER had usps give tracking info. And I paid for the option.
- [01:36:37] <djlewis>
they say it is on its way and they might mention it arrived a day after that happens.

lemay: you might consider Gentoo ;)
- [01:51:42] <lemay>
Is that a type of linux?
- [01:53:13] * mrc_001_ (n=mrc_001@88-117-116-163.adsl.highway.telekom.at) Quit ()
- [01:53:19] <lemay>
I am a pretty big linux rookie - for this development effort I have installed a vmware ubuntu image
- [01:53:48] <lemay>
I??? an engineer and Ive done a lot of development on Windows, but never linux before
- [01:54:24] <lemay>
I was more concerned with the toolchain and build process for developing an application, rather than the flavor of linux that I develop on
- [01:54:37] <lemay>
but that could just be because I am ignorant of all things linux :P
- [01:55:20] <lemay>
why do you like Gentoo, javaJake?
- [01:56:32] <javaJake>
lemay: Gentoo is all about compiling things from scratch.
- [01:56:52] <javaJake>
The entire OS is/can be custom-built.
- [01:57:20] <javaJake>
The toolchains are readily available in the distro, because they are basically required for the package manager to do anything useful ;)
- [01:57:45] <lemay>
which is handy for embedded cross compiling, eh?
- [01:58:16] <Crofton|work>
er
- [01:58:24] <Crofton|work>
I'd ask mru
- [01:58:40] <javaJake>
lemay: cross-compiling is another beast...
- [01:59:02] <Crofton|work>
the beagle can do native compiles, but that is not its strength
- [01:59:33] <javaJake>
lemay: Gentoo for Pandora is a project that has ported Gentoo to BeagleBoard. In the meantime it has documented how it's done things. One of those things is cross-compiling: http://gentoo.openpandora.org/wiki/index.php/Create_Image
- [02:00:17] <lemay>
yea, I am strongly leaning towards cross compiling, using the PC as the development platform for the BB
- [02:00:19] <javaJake>
lemay: this guide, while Gentoo-centric, generates a fairly generic cross-compiler toolchain.
- [02:00:27] <javaJake>
lemay: might be a good resource
- [02:00:34] * lemay clicks
- [02:01:58] <javaJake>
lemay: the first two pages are most useful. And while Gentoo experience is handy, for the first two pages it isn't necessary.
- [02:02:48] <lemay>
I??l read them :)
- [02:03:32] <ds2>
djlewis: pong
- [02:03:57] <javaJake>
lemay: be sure to look into alternatives too, like CodeSourcery.
- [02:04:03] <javaJake>
lemay: just in case this doesn't work out for you
- [02:04:08] <lemay>
yessir
- [02:04:29] <lemay>
I??e downloaded the codesourcery lite already - but it would be nice to integrate it into and IDE
- [02:05:13] <lemay>
and I have not quite wrapped my mind around the linux process for linking libraries
- [02:05:23] <javaJake>
Ah, OK
- [02:05:46] <lemay>
it?? great being a rookie again
- [02:06:01] <javaJake>
Well, I have to go to sleep. There are more knowledgeable people here, so be sure to hang around and ask questions. If no one responds, leave your client on for a few hours. Often someone sees it later in the day and has an answer.
- [02:06:09] <javaJake>

- [02:29:48] <lemay>

it's the TX that gets tricky because of the Si570 tuning with the I2C/USB adapter

bandwidth? the Soft Rock 6.3 RXTX works on several bands on SSB so you can use most of the digital modes - BPSK, Olivia, CW, even frikkin Hellschrieber!!
- [02:35:18] <Crofton>
yeah rx only
- [02:36:22] <bobkatzz>
yeah - djlewis - that's still in the works - only because I haven't actually been able to get to transmitting with the SR 6.3 yet - only with the SWL PSK20 for BPKS31

I thought the pinmux only controlled the expansion header, to be honest I haven't looked into it much for the lcd header?
- [07:53:45] <psykes>
wouldn't I have to tell the kernel to not use it as LCD output somehow?
- [07:54:17] <av500>
psykes: almost every pin on the omap3 is controlled by pinmux
- [07:54:39] <av500>
and so far the kernel does not control the LCD lines at all, IIRC
- [07:56:06] <psykes>
will look more closely at this thank you.

- [08:30:56] <florian>
Usually the machine configuration specifies which kernel is the correct one. Somtimes there are speciall bb files for some kernels but usually its just "linux".
- [08:31:33] <florian>
The linux kernel bb files have information about compatibility and if they are preferred for a particular machine.
- [08:31:57] <florian>
They usually have patches for the devices thy support as well.
- [08:32:27] <florian>
The tx27 device might be a good example.
- [08:32:39] <RobertBerger>
I guess this might help, thanks

I try to make my own Image for BB using openembedded and I have a question: When I using the command "bitbake x11-image" how can I know which version of the kernel will be participate in the construction of the image? I try to run the SPI and I don't know which files should I taken into account using a patch.
- [11:48:08] <ToM____>
use a Philip Balister's patch "0001-Changes-to-make-MCSPI3-work-on- the-Beagle-Board-expa" which was written for kernel version 2.6.28 (the current version which appears to me after the construction of the image is "Omap1 2.6.30"). In the repository are some version like: omap-linux-2.6.28 (original) and omap-linux-2.6.29 but oamp- linux-2.6.30 version does not exist. Any ideas?
