My kids and I have been inspired to build a near-space balloon - I think it's a great project for them and a fun tinker-project for me between exams. My first question is this: Is beagle board a good platform for me to send up with said balloon to record all kinds of weather data?

  525. [23:04:52] <mru> 1st google hit for "beagleboard balloon"

  528. [23:11:49] <russell--> koen: let's not judge, zeros are bits too!
  529. [23:12:48] <mru> if you cut a zero in half, you get two ones (slightly bent, but still clearly ones)
  530. [23:13:34] <MarkSoric> mru: I saw that as well - just wondering on what the differences between using arduino vs beagle board would be...
  531. [23:14:11] <mru> MarkSoric: I don't think either of them is rated for such environments
  532. [23:14:47] <MarkSoric> Based on temp/pressure, eh? I think temp is ok - heating packs. Worried about the pressure.
  533. [23:14:57] <mru> why would pressure matter?
  534. [23:15:01] <russell--> MarkSoric: weight is probably a factor to consider
  535. [23:15:05] <mru> it doesn't run on steam
  536. [23:15:11] <russell--> and what you want to record
  537. [23:15:19] <mru> temperature is more of a worry
  538. [23:15:54] <MarkSoric> russell--: I'd like to get temperature and pressure readings as well as track movements via gps. I say pressure only for the camera I want to send up.
  539. [23:16:17] <MarkSoric> At this point, I'm just sort of spitballing to see what my options are
  540. [23:17:03] <jay69811> tons of options
  541. [23:17:17] <russell--> do you want live data back?
  542. [23:17:31] <russell--> or just record
  543. [23:17:41] <russell--> and store or whatever
  544. [23:17:42] * peabody124 (~peabody12@c-98-201-56-63.hsd1.tx.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
  545. [23:18:15] <russell--> your gps will stop functioning above a certain altitude iirc
  546. [23:18:44] <mru> or at least become less accurate

  548. [23:19:39] <jay69811> without atmosphere the silicon could have temperature gradient issues
  549. [23:21:12] <mru> heat transfer efficiency to the air obviously drops with pressure
  550. [23:21:43] <mru> but the beagle doesn't run even warm at normal pressure and temperature
  551. [23:22:05] <mru> so with the low ambient temps up there, it ought to still work, at least if you put a heatsink on it

  555. [23:28:56] <MarkSoric> Hmmm.. I'm in for a fair bit of reading it seems - with Community gone for a bit, I'll have some time, too! :D I'd like live data back, ideally, but as long as I can track gps where it comes back down, I'm fine - recording is more than ok.
