  96. [03:57:56] <Dan211> hi there, has anyone had problems with the BeagleBone transmitting serial data at > 115.2k baud?
  97. [03:58:21] <Dan211> It seems to receive OK at higher speeds (500k) but not transmit.
  98. [03:58:43] <Dan211> I have scoped the signal and it seems to be OK, however it cannot be successfully read by my PC
  99. [04:01:26] * Russ (foobar@ip68-106-254-4.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #beagle
  100. [04:04:40] <jay6981> never seen a uart run at more than 115k
  101. [04:05:32] <aholler_> some usb-dongles are able to do more
  102. [04:05:38] * aholler_ is now known as aholler
  103. [04:06:03] <jay6981> serial is 12v right? lots of reflection afaik
  104. [04:08:06] * dm8tbr regularly uses OMAP3 with 1MBaud
  105. [04:08:28] <mdp> jay6981, you're thinking of rs-232 most likely at that level
  106. [04:08:41] <mdp> serial doesn't mean rs-232
  107. [04:08:57] <jay6981> usb dongles are rs-232 right?
  108. [04:09:25] <mdp> only at the DTE end
  109. [04:09:46] <aholler> Dan211: are you sure the pc-side is able to do more?
  110. [04:09:57] <jay6981> he said he was talking to a PC so I figured 232
  111. [04:10:16] * Guest37345 (~mike@c-71-63-115-202.hsd1.va.comcast.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

  113. [04:10:26] <mdp> for example, beaglebone uarts are 3.3v i/o???
  114. [04:10:56] <mdp> jay6981: hrm, most pcs don't have rs-232 ports now though
  115. [04:11:22] <dm8tbr> the problem beyond 115k2 is that some chipsets don't cope well with them
  116. [04:11:25] <Russ> 12v to -12v is a "typical" voltage swing for rs232
  117. [04:11:36] <Russ> but it could be different depending on hardware
  118. [04:11:37] <mdp> with beaglebone's ftdi???the serial comm never is translated into rs-232 for transmission to the pc
  119. [04:11:38] <jay6981> hm, TIL
  120. [04:11:54] <mdp> Russ, up to +-15V per spec, in fact, iirc
  121. [04:12:15] <aholler> hmm, the ftdi should be able to do more
  122. [04:12:21] <dm8tbr> e.g. pl2303 won't do 500 and 1000k but something 'close' to that
  123. [04:12:42] <aholler> I had forgotten the bone has an ftdi on board
  124. [04:12:53] <dm8tbr> usb2serial ftdi I have regularly used with 1MBaud

  129. [04:29:21] <Dan211> hey guys sorry for the slow reply. Some additional information - I am trying to communicate between an Arduino and BeagleBone using serial. I am able to send data Arduino -> Beagle at 500kbps but unable to go above 115.2k the other way. If I connect tx to rx on the Arduino, it can handle 500kbps, likewise with the Beagle but not when connected together. I am doing some level conversion to account for 3.3V <-> 5V
  130. [04:30:11] <Dan211> 5V -> 3.3V uses a voltage divider, 3.3V to 5V uses a transistor but should work without (and does at <= 115.2k)
  131. [04:30:55] * harshpb (~harsh@122.167.99.242) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
  132. [04:31:09] <aholler> some unimportant information ;)
  133. [04:31:26] <Dan211> additionally, I cannot communicate with my PC at > 115.2k (using ttl -> RS232 converter)

  141. [04:34:53] <dm8tbr> mh, two things I wonder: a) is the level shifter fast enough / does it distort the signal b) does the UART timing differ somehow on both sides

  143. [04:35:18] <aholler> some people have a very short attention span
  144. [04:36:07] <Dan211> even without the conversion from 3.3 -> 5V it should still work but it doesn't (only above 115.2k)
  145. [04:36:15] <Dan211> I have also scoped the signal and it doesn
  146. [04:36:18] <Dan211> * Doesn

  151. [04:42:46] <Dan211> UPDATE: It now looks as if I can get it working at 500kbps for Beagle -> Arduino if I put a slight delay between writing characters and I change the data bits to 7, i.e. 7N1????

  171. [05:10:14] <aholler> so you could be sure it isn't your cabling or whatever because the onboard-ftdi is likely wired correctly
  172. [05:11:46] <Russ> a good symptom of not having a good return path is 'I measured it and it's fine'
  173. [05:14:22] <aholler> we have a german saying which is "Wer misst misst Mist". That translates to "who measures measures bullshit".
  174. [05:14:34] <Russ> what a horrible saying
  175. [05:14:44] <Russ> its like the asian saying that the nail that sticks up gets hammered down
  176. [05:16:06] <aholler> the saying proved too often to be sure ;)
  177. [05:16:21] <Russ> you can't get very far with circuitry without measuring :)
  178. [05:17:29] <Dan211> aholler, uEnv.txt only seems to contain "optargs=run_hardware_tests quiet"
  179. [05:20:09] <jay6981> was that a mao quote?
  180. [05:20:17] <aholler> you can add "console=ttyO2,115200n8"

  184. [05:21:39] <Dan211> ok thanks, Linux is still quite new for me

  928. [16:55:22] <goodpeer> I tried to write a config file and put it into modules-load.d
  929. [16:55:39] <goodpeer> then use update-modules to generate a file called modules at /etc
  930. [16:56:03] <goodpeer> but it was not working to block some modules that I don't want to be loaded
  931. [16:56:55] <goodpeer> and once my angstrom version booted, there was no network service
  932. [16:57:14] <goodpeer> i had to use /etc/init.d/networking restart to get network up
  933. [16:58:38] <goodpeer> the third question is everytime the board was booted, the date and time automatically reset back to 1970
  934. [16:59:13] <goodpeer> i doubt the timer code was not working
