The Space Station

The Space Station is a four-foot-tall structure constructed mostly from K'Nex that, through its use of a series of ramps and the Earth's natural gravitational pull, harnesses the kinetic energy of medium-sized plastic balls to produce sound output.

The Space Station includes five modular propeller devices, also constructed with K’Nex, that can be strategically placed at any point along the structure’s three main ramps. The propellers spin every time a ball passes through them on its way down a ramp, and the spinning motion of each propeller is detected by an electronic sensor; sensor output to an Arduino Nano triggers and modulates samples that are played by The Space Station’s onboard BeagleBoard.
