Some of you have heard me say that when a Raspberry Pi goes into space, it’s news, but when a Beagle board goes into space, it’s Tuesday. Sure, it’s hyperbole, but it sure feels to me that I talk to a lot of people putting various boards of ours into space, especially BeagleBone Black, without a lot of hubbub. Well, it’s nice to see it actually show up in some news, even if it isn’t about a specific launch.
Covered by LWN.net, BeagleV-Fire is the chosen target for Space Grade Linux. This was announced at the Linux Foundation Open Source Summit even in Amsterdam in August and the video of the presentation is linked below.
According the the LWN.net article,
It is similar to a Raspberry Pi, he said, but is based on the RISC-V architecture. It is "very affordable and we're choosing this so that everyone on the team can have it and we can deploy and test easily".
With space becoming more accessible all the time, collaborating on the basic building blocks in an open fashion seems critical.
